You need to drive only 10 minutes to the tram (Summer of Winter) at the Squaw Valley USA Ski Area, site of the 1950 Olympic Winter Games and only one of 15 Alpine ski areas and eleven cross-country ski areas that can be reached in a short time.
Other interesting areas include Ponderosa Ranch (of Bonanza TV fame), Donner Memorial Museum, Emerald Bay, Virginia City Mining town and North Shore and Reno casinos, all within 20 to 45 minutes driving time.
